The sex market, both in Norway and internationally, is known to be changeable, adaptable, and notoriously difficult to map. This also makes it challenging to discuss the typical characteristics of the Norwegian market for the buying and selling of sex. Over the past 40 years, there have been several significant changes in terms of composition and organization.

So, what does the market look like in 2023? How many people are actually selling sex in Norway? And what are the characteristics of those who end up selling sexual services today?

These are questions that often arise when discussing sex work in a Norwegian context. Nevertheless, there are no recent surveys of the Norwegian prostitution market, and the few studies that exist have only estimated female sex workers selling sex on official escort websites or on the streets, while men, transgender individuals, and individuals selling sexual services more sporadically or outside the traditional prostitution market have been poorly studied.

This report is not an attempt at a comprehensive mapping of the prostitution market in Norway but aims to provide insight into how many and who is selling sex by looking at the users of Pro Sentret's services, as well as three advertisement pages for individuals selling sex.
